If your BindTuning Stocks Ticker Web Part is configured with a third-party data provider like Finnhub and is currently displaying no information (appearing blank), this article explains the common causes and outlines available resolutions.

Symptom

  • Stocks Ticker Web Part appears blank or shows no stock information.

  • This issue typically occurs when the web part is configured to retrieve data from external providers, especially for non-U.S. or international stock markets.

Cause: Changes in 3rd-party data provider policies

The primary reason for the Stocks Ticker Web Part displaying no information, particularly for international markets, stems from changes in the business models and API policies of free stock data providers.

Specifically, Finnhub no longer offers a Free API for international market data (outside the USA). Real-time stock prices for non-U.S. exchanges are now generally inaccessible from Finnhub without a paid subscription or a direct partnership. This change has impacted many users and companies globally who previously relied on free Finnhub data for international markets.

Resolution options

Your resolution path will depend on whether you require international market data and your willingness to subscribe to a paid data service.

For International Market Data (paid)

If your primary need is for real-time international market data, you will likely need to acquire a paid subscription from a financial data provider.

  1. Contact Finnhub: If you wish to continue using Finnhub, contact them directly at [email protected] for information on their paid subscription tiers and partnership opportunities for international market data.

  2. Explore Alternative Paid Providers: Research other reputable financial data providers that offer real-time international market data via API (e.g., Alpha Vantage, Twelve Data, Polygon.io). Once subscribed, you would need to configure the Stocks Ticker Web Part to use your chosen provider's API.

According to a note added to Finnhub's documentation "Real-time stock prices for international markets are supported for Enterprise clients via our (Finnhub's) partner's feed."

For U.S. Stocks and Funds Only (free)

If your Stocks Ticker Web Part is intended only for U.S. stocks and stock funds, you may be able to use a provider that still offers a free tier for U.S. market data.

  1. Use another free provider: Explore current financial data providers that offer free API access specifically for U.S. equities (e.g., Alpha Vantage typically has a free tier for certain data points).

  2. Acquire API Key: Follow the chosen provider's instructions to sign up and obtain a free API key.

  3. Configure Web Part: Access your Stocks Ticker Web Part settings and configure it to use the new data provider and the API key you obtained.
