In SharePoint environments, content presentation impacts user experience and information discoverability. BindTuning Web Parts provide robust content sorting options, allowing you to order the content they display strategically. This sorting capability ensures users can quickly find relevant information, prioritize critical updates, or follow a logical flow.
Sorting in modern web parts
For BindTuning Web Parts used on SharePoint Online Modern Pages, sorting controls are integrated directly into the web part's settings panel.
Edit the SharePoint page where the BindTuning Web Part is located.
Select the BindTuning Web Part you wish to configure.
In the web part's settings panel, navigate to the tab that includes "Sort" in its name. This tab often also contains filter and search capabilities.
Within this section, you will find options to define how your web part entries are ordered (e.g., by a specific column, in ascending or descending order). You will typically select the column name directly from a dropdown list or input its internal name.
Default Sort vs Sort by
Within the Modern web part settings, you'll often encounter two primary sorting configurations:
Default Sort: This setting determines the initial order in which content is displayed when a user first lands on the page. It's the pre-configured arrangement for the web part.
"Sort by" (for end-users): Some BindTuning ModernX Web Parts offer an option to enable end-users to sort the content themselves. If enabled, this allows visitors to dynamically reorder the displayed items based on different criteria directly on the page, giving them more control over how they consume the information.
Sorting in classic web parts
For BindTuning Web Parts deployed on Classic SharePoint Pages or SharePoint On-Premises Modern Pages, sorting is managed through a specific field in the web part properties. You will need the internal name of the list column you wish to sort by.
To define the order of your Web Part items:
Access your SharePoint list:
Go to Site contents and open the list that is connected to your web part.
Find the internal name of the column:
From the top menu, click List and then List Settings (or go to Settings (gear icon) > List Settings).
In the "Columns" section, click to open the column name you want to use for sorting.
In the browser's URL bar, look for "...Field=...". The text following "Field=" and before the next "&" (or end of URL) is the internal name. Copy this name.
Example URL Snippet:
...Field=**InternalColumnName**&...

Configure the web part:
Edit the SharePoint page where your BindTuning Web Part is.
Access the Web Part Properties (usually by clicking the web part's dropdown arrow or ellipsis and selecting "Edit Web Part").
Locate the "Order by" text box within the web part properties pane.
Paste the copied internal column name into this text box.
Choose the desired order: Ascending or Descending.
If available, use the "Add Order By" option to include additional sorting criteria, following the same steps.
Save your changes to the web part and then to the page.

Considerations
Before configuring sorting for your BindTuning Web Parts, please keep the following in mind:
Web Part Versions: For users on SharePoint Online, we highly recommend ensuring your BindTuning Web Parts are up to date. Regularly updating your web parts guarantees you have access to the latest Modern features, including streamlined sorting capabilities and performance improvements.
Identifying Your Web Part Version: You can easily distinguish between BindTuning's web part experiences by their icons:
Our Modernization Goal: BindTuning is actively working to migrate all our web parts to the Modern experience. While our goal is to offer a fully modern suite, there are currently still some web parts that function within the Classic Experience, even when used on SharePoint Online modern pages. This guide covers both scenarios to ensure you can sort content effectively regardless of the web part version.
